((OOC: This scene is open to everyone. Feel free to just show up. Or Andreu could have invited you out. Or whatever.))

Scene: The Tahiti Nui Restaurant, Hanalei, HI
Time: Night

Andreu, dressed casual, heads into the restaurant. Karaoke's not usually his thing, but he's heard good things about the local band. Definitely time for a night out. Thankfully, he's arrived early enough that he disn't have to wait long to get in.

Lakshmi strolls in, a little while after Andreu's arrival, in a black and gold chaniya choli (a type of Indian outfit with a short top and long skirt). Spotting Andreu, she heads over to his table with a smile.

"Ah, there you are! I hope this band will live up to your praises. Do you think there will be dancing?" She glances around the restaurant excitedly as she takes her seat at the table, obviously very pleased with the chance for a night out.

Andreu smiles as Lakshmi arrives, "I certainly hope so."

((OOC: Bounced from here))

With Ikki in tow, Saki makes her way over to stand by the table and waits politely for Andreu and Lakshmi to notice them.

Once they have, she bows. "Good evening," she says in accented English. "May we join you?"
20th-Sep-2006 01:47 pm (UTC)
Andreu looks up, "Certainly... unless you mind..." He looks at Lakshmi.
21st-Sep-2006 05:59 am (UTC)
"Not at all -- the more the merrier!"
21st-Sep-2006 11:36 am (UTC)
Saki beams. "Thank you very much!"

As she takes a seat, she looks around curiously. "Do you like karaoke, too? This place is much bigger than Peppermint Stick back in Kyoto; is that normal for the United States?"
22nd-Sep-2006 04:19 am (UTC)
Lakshmi laughs. "Well, I am not the one to ask about the United States, though I have visited before. Perhaps Andreu will know. They do have karaoke in India, where I live, but I suspect the music here will be quite different. I somehow doubt they will have very many Bollywood tunes in their collection...

"As for me, I've done it a few times, but I am far more of a dancer than a singer. Do not expect wonders of my voice -- there's a reason why the Indian film industry usually dubs in the vocals for musical numbers! Most of our actors can dance well, but can't sing. Really, I am more here because Andreu said the band was supposed to be very good. But I might be able to be talked into getting on stage..."

From the way she says this, it seems evident that getting her onstage would probably not require very much persuasion at all. Getting her to leave the stage again afterwards might be a challenge.
22nd-Sep-2006 11:02 pm (UTC)
Andreu nods briefly before Lakshmi starts talking. Once she's done, "There are even larger places about, though probably on the mainland. I'm not much of a karaoke-ist m'self, but I've been known to dabble. I come for the dancing when the band's on."
28th-Sep-2006 12:38 pm (UTC)
Saki nods, her dark eyes bright with anticipation. "Dancing is nice, too. I learned some traditional Japanese dances when I was little - Grandfather insisted - but I am better at more modern sorts of dancing."

She turns to Lakshmi, her eyes alight with wonder. "You are a dancer? How interesting! Have you studied dancing long?"
28th-Sep-2006 11:49 pm (UTC)
"I had dance classes as a child, and it became a lifelong interest. It was my major in university -- I focussed mostly on Indian dance, but also did some overseas study in London and Paris, doing modern dance and ballet. And a year of post-graduate study on the role of folk dance in transmitting myths and legends."

Warming to her topic, she continues "I've heard that the native dance forms here have a similar role, but haven't yet been able to experience that in person -- hopefully soon! Did you know this island was once the home of the largest Hula school in Hawaii? I don't know what happened to it... Of course, it's so difficult to tell when looking for performances what's authentic and what's just staged for tourists..."

And then, realizing she's getting off-topic: "Oh yes - where was I? My studies! Since finishing university, I've mostly worked in film -- Indian films generally have a lot of dancing. But I've also travelled a fair amount, much of it to learn dance styles from other cultures. I don't know very much about Japanese dance yet, though -- it's still on my to-learn list! Perhaps you can show me a little sometime?"

** Oh dear -- that's probably far more than she wanted to know! I must learn not to talk people's ears off just because they ask about something that happens to be one of my major interests... **
29th-Sep-2006 07:33 pm (UTC)
Saki listens intently, her eyes riveted on Lakshmi with interest. "That is...what is the English word? Fascination?" She looks curiously at the other woman and the men, wondering if she got it right.

"You have traveled so many places - Paris, London, and now Hawaii - you must have learned a great deal, not only about dance, but about those cultures as well!" She beams. "I would very much like to talk about the places you have been sometime - my father and grandfather have traveled to many places on business, and they always had interesting stories to tell."
29th-Sep-2006 11:03 pm (UTC)
Andreu listens to the ladies talk, an amused smile on his face.
13th-Sep-2006 05:24 pm (UTC)
Dressed in a fashionable blouse and skirt ensemble, Saki enters the restaurant, speaking in Japanese to someone out of view.

"[Come on, Ikki-kun! You promised to take me out for karaoke, remember?]"
13th-Sep-2006 05:30 pm (UTC)
Ikki follows her in. "[Karaoke's not really my thing,]" he replies, "[But you can sing if you want.]"
13th-Sep-2006 05:35 pm (UTC)
Saki flashes him a smile. "[That isn't what Kentaro and Shun told me.]" A giggle. "[Of course, they did say you have to have a few before you'll get up on stage.]"
20th-Sep-2006 12:30 pm (UTC)
Ikki resists the urge to bury his forehead in his palm. **[Way to go, Ken-kun...you just had to tell her about that night, didn't you?]**
20th-Sep-2006 12:35 pm (UTC)
Saki giggles behind her hand, then decides to let Ikki off the hook. "[You can just listen to me sing if you want,]" she says magnanimously, patting his arm.

Ever curious, she looks around, and her dark eyes light up as she sees some people she knows. Eager for company, she takes Ikki by the hand and tries to lead him toward Andreu and Lakshmi's table.
20th-Sep-2006 12:39 pm (UTC)
Ikki is at first startled as Saki leads him toward one of the tables, but relaxes once he notices who's sitting there. Unconsciously straightening his clothes, he follows his sentai-mate to the table.
26th-Sep-2006 11:50 pm (UTC)
As the evening progresses, the host takes to the stage to announce the start the evening's karaoke.
28th-Sep-2006 12:39 pm (UTC)
Saki lets out a squeak of delight at the announcement and looks at her table-mates. "Would you like to come with me?"
28th-Sep-2006 11:51 pm (UTC)
Lakshmi looks thoughtful. "Hmmm, perhaps... But I wouldn't want to go first -- I'd rather see what sorts of things other people pick first. I've never been to a karaoke club in the west."
29th-Sep-2006 08:17 pm (UTC)
Saki smiles. "I have only been to the ones in Tokyo, and ones in Kyoto, while I was at university. But perhaps we will let someone else go first."
29th-Sep-2006 11:13 pm (UTC)
As if to accomodate the ladies' wishes, a few drunk guys get on the stage. They hoot and catcall towards a group of younger women they apparently trying to impress. When they start singing "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" by UB40, the various people in the crowd laugh at their off-key sound. There's some brief boo-ing from someone the back, but it's quickly silenced when the woman next to him elbows him in the stomach.
3rd-Oct-2006 06:26 am (UTC)
Lakshmi turns to Saki, with a slightly mischievous smile. "Well, we can't very well be any worse than that, now can we?"

She looks back toward the stage intently, like a cat watching potential prey, deciding whether to pounce. "So... did you want to do one together? What sort of music do you like best? I'm fond of songs from musicals, myself..."
12th-Oct-2006 06:49 pm (UTC)
Saki tilts her head in an almost birdlike fashion as she considers Lakshmi's question. "Musicals are good. I like J-Pop, but I do not know if they have any of that here." A smile. "I do not think Othello has made it out of Japan yet."
15th-Oct-2006 04:42 pm (UTC)
Andreu looks between the pair, slightly amused, but giving no indication of a desire to join them. He briefly looks at Ikki.
16th-Oct-2006 12:59 pm (UTC)
[Saki smiles]. "I do not think Othello has made it out of Japan yet."

"And a good thing, too," Ikki mutters under his breath. He catches Andreu's look, and seems to brighten a little. "While the ladies sing, would you like something to drink?" He points to his nose rather than his chest. "I will buy."
16th-Oct-2006 11:02 pm (UTC)
Andreu smiles, "Well, if you're buying, how can I say no?"
16th-Oct-2006 04:54 am (UTC)
"I do not think they will have too much in the way of either Indian or Japanese music, but hopefully we will be able to find something we both know. Shall we?"

Assuming Saki joins her, Lakshmi strolls over to inspect the music selection, and begins to look for something familiar, preferably from stage or screen, that would work for two women to sing together.
